J & J's owner, Steve Kohl, with one of his Giant Heros -- Now that's a sandwich!

As soon as he could reach the kitchen counter, Steve became passionate about cooking.  After college, he received the opportunity to attend the Culinary Institute of America in New York.  Working in Manhatten led Steve to the only food he had time to eat, at New York Delis.  The next twelve years found him in four diamond fine dining establishments across the country.  Throughout his tenure in $100 a head food service, he found himself missing the simplicity of the delis he had come to love in New York.

After a stint locally at Il Palio and Four Square Restaurant, Steve decided it was time to own his own place.  It would seem the fates conspired to help.  Steve contacted a restaurant broker, and in describing the kind of place he wanted to buy he mentioned a little sandwich shop in Chapel Hill called J & J’s Deli.  The broker said that it had just been listed for sale with him the day before.  Steve bought the place a few months later.

These days Steve and his wife, Dana, live in Mebane, North Carolina where they breed and train labrador bird-dogs and enjoy the quiet country life… whenever Steve can get away from running the deli and catering business.
